Chapter 17

"What did you find in my review?" Charles asked, his throat constricted.

Helena hooked an arm through her bra. "It was different from the other reviews."

"How?"

She pushed her hands behind her back and fastened the bra. "The wording. The care. It was as if Gerard had been working on your review for quite some time. It's quite a document. Charts. Graphs. Even footnotes. He was putting you up for promotion."

"What?"

"In the next cycle. In fact, he wanted you to succeed him. He was retiring."

"That is… surprising. He knew he had no chance of promoting me. There are legal restrictions. I signed them. I remember."

"Gerard accounted for that. The provision for general amnesty in recognition of years of service was actually embedded in your review, right where a judge would have to sign it."

"I-I don't know what to say to that."

"Where were you last Thursday night?"

"What?"

"What were you doing? Where were you, and who were you with?"

His mind raced. "What do you mean?"

Helena slipped her blouse over her head. "We're investigating the whereabouts of everyone on the staff for the forty-eight hours before the murder."

"I was… um, I was here."

"Good." She shook her hair. "Doing what?"

"My work. Of course. Look, why are you asking me these questions?"

"I told you, we have to be thorough."

"But shouldn't there be some sort of official process? Some detective or local police who comes to take my story?"

"There is. I asked them to hold off on questioning you."

He sat up and swung his legs off the side of the bed. "Why?"

She balanced on one leg and put on one of her high-heel shoes. "Look, I've got to go. They're going to want to talk to you, and you need to have some sort of documentation to back up where you were."

"What do you mean? Documentation? As in evidence?"

She leaned on him, reaching down to put on her other shoe. "As in proof that you were doing what you say you were doing."

"But why?" He looked down at her hair brushing against his nakedness as she struggled with her shoe. "Why in the world would… am I some sort of suspect?"

She stood. "Of course not. The investigation is being conducted internally. We are a scientific organization. We believe in being thorough. In observation. You know that. Now I have to go." She headed for the door, swaying in her heels.

"Go where?" he asked, following her.

"Frank gets in from the immigration office in an hour."

He stopped. "Oh."

She stepped toward him and raised a hand to his cheek. "I promised myself a long time ago that if I ever found you again, I would tell you how I felt all these years. It's been wonderful to see you again, to finally show you how I felt. How I feel. How I'll always feel. But, baby?"

"Yes?"

"Figure out your damned alibi." She kissed him on the cheek, opened the door, and left.
